About Charming towns

VILLAGES WITH CHARM. CALACEITE, MEDINACELI, OLIVENZA AND TUDANCA.

Since 2016, Correos has issued the philatelic series Pueblos con Encanto to spread the geographical heritage of Spain and highlight the variety and richness of the charming towns that make up our country. On this occasion, four new self-adhesive stamps are added that simulate old postal strips, folded in bellows format, where the reverse of the stamp is also printed as if it were a postcard.

Calaceite (Teruel). Declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1973, very close to the Catalan border, stands this town, the cultural capital of the Matarraña/Matarranya region. Life unfolds around the Plaza Mayor, its parish and the town hall dating back to 1609. From there its beautiful streets are born where there are many stone manor houses, decorated with wrought iron balconies.

Medinaceli (Soria). Medinaceli has been, since the time of the Roman occupation, on a hill to the east of the one occupied by the Celtiberian Occilis, where it has its origin.

During that time, the salt mines in the valley began to be exploited, an activity that continued until 1994. Medinaceli was the dividing line between Christians and Muslims. Its urban center makes up a network of narrow streets, where sometimes you can even touch both sides of them just by stretching your arms. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1963.

Olivenza (Badajoz). Of Templar origin, he belonged for years to the Kingdom of Portugal. Through the Treaty of Badajoz of June 6, Manuel Godoy formally incorporates it into Spanish sovereignty. It has a rich monumental heritage, especially Manueline Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. This Spanish town with a Portuguese soul brings together the best of both cultures.

Tudanca (Cantabria). Nestled in the Nansa valley, the oldest historical mention dates from the year 1094. It was declared a National Historic-Artistic Site in 1983. Rustic houses abound in it, among which the Casona de Tudanca stands out, built in the times of Felipe V. Such notable personalities as Unamuno, Giner de los Ríos, Alberti or Gerardo Diego passed through it. In the village of Tudanca, the ancient custom of exploiting pastures in community still survives, according to the ancestral "Prau Concejo".
