About Latvian Architecture

On the 12th of August 2022, Latvijas Pasts plans to release the fourth and final postage stamp dedicated to the theme of water towers in the series Latvian Architecture, and it features the second so-called twin water tower located at Matīsa Street, Riga, which is one of the oldest water towers in the city. The design of the new stamp in the form of a miniature painting was created by the artist Aleksejs Naumovs. The water tower stamp will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in the post centre Sakta at 32 Brīvības bulvāris, Riga, from 9 AM to 6 PM on the 12th of August 2022.

The final stamp dedicated to the theme of water towers depicts the second of the so-called twin water towers located at Matīsa Street, Riga. The print run of the stamp is 25,000 copies and its face value is €1.20, which corresponds to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class up to 20 grams within Latvia. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 800 copies. The new philatelic releases have been designed by the artist A. Naumovs, professor and former rector at the Art Academy of Latvia.

Matīsa Street, Riga features two of the oldest Riga water towers, the so-called twin water towers, which are one of the most interesting elements of the municipal engineering in Riga. One of the Matīsa Street water towers can be seen in the first stamp dedicated to the theme of water towers, which Latvijas Pasts released in 2019, while the final stamp in this philatelic series depicts the second Matīsa Street water tower. Both water towers are one of the first water supply systems of this type built in Riga and they were constructed between 1896 and 1897 according to the design by the architects Otto Intze and Rūdolfs Frišs. The water towers functioned until 1905, but now their reservoirs are empty. The twin water towers have been designated as architectural monuments of national importance.
