The Fundación Ópera de Oviedo is heading towards the celebration of 75 years of uninterrupted opera at the Teatro Campoamor, after a long lyrical tradition in the city that dates back to the Casa de Comedias de El Fontán in the 17th century and a consolidated cycle that is among the longest-lived in our country. The Ópera de Oviedo is already working on the programming and the development of parallel activities to celebrate the anniversary in a special way, with the purpose of remembering special moments, artists who have shaped its history and the most important milestones that have promoted and carved, throughout these years, its prestige and national and international projection.
The 75th anniversary season will begin in September 2022 with a world premiere that is a tribute to the lyrical and literary heritage of the Principality of Asturias, a contemporary opera by composer Luis Vázquez del Fresno, "La dama del alba", inspired by the popular play by Alejandro Casona. A new milestone for the Campoamor Theater, in an important event whose honorary presidency has already been accepted by His Majesty King Felipe VI.
Along with this premiere and the other operas to be performed during the season, a series of parallel activities is being organized, including exhibitions, talks and meetings with experts, and the Oviedo Opera's strategic plan for the coming years will be presented, which includes aspects of sustainability, reaching out to the younger strata of the population, opportunities for home-grown talent and the presentation of titles never before seen at the Teatro Campoamor, in co-productions with theaters and festivals from all corners of the world.
The future of opera in Oviedo is highly promising and exciting for its promoters. With the issue of this commemorative stamp we hope to give even more relevance to this artistic project that projects a very positive image of Asturias and is a real tourist, creative and economic engine for the region.
