Tempus fugit!
Seconds, minutes and hours measure out days, weeks, months and years. Within this system we do our best to develop and direct our daily routine and holiday observances, economic endeavours, social relationships and spiritual and creative activities. Everything is measured out, nothing can be extended or shortened, because the clock is ticking and time is slipping away. T
These days it is common to hear people complain that the pace of life today is much faster than it was decades or centuries ago. But this is just an excuse for our own behaviour as we dash to and fro, ever in a hurry and often with mindless impatience. In a more rational age we would find ways to slow things down, instead of constantly and inexorably adding new actions and activities to a framework that is not infinite. We frequently fail to realise that there is only as much room in this system as is allotted to us, no matter how much we try to cram into it.
In a similar situation, our ancestors would say: “Hold your horses!” The clocks go on ticking, as they must, and it is up to us to ensure that our lives proceed at a reasonable pace, since every day should be rich in content and worth a reasonable amount of effort!
