About V Centenary of the Cathedral of Granada

The imposing Cathedral of Granada has reached a historic milestone: it has completed five centuries since it was founded in 1523. Located in the heart of the city, this majestic architectural work is a silent witness to the rich history and cultural evolution of Granada over the centuries.

Also known as the Cathedral of Santa María de la Encarnación, this Spanish Renaissance jewel was designed by renowned architect Diego de Siloé, who masterfully fused late Gothic and Renaissance styles, creating a unique structure that has captivated visitors for five hundred years.

One of the highlights of the Cathedral of Granada is its imposing main façade, which reflects the exquisite ornamentation of the Spanish Renaissance. The intricate details of its doors and windows, as well as the sculptures that adorn its exterior, testify to the artistic talent of the period and reveal the devotion of the builders to their faith.

Upon entering its interior, visitors are amazed by the magnificence of its naves, its overwhelming height and the luminosity it radiates thanks to the stained glass windows that decorate its windows. The imposing main altarpiece, masterpiece of the sculptor Alonso Cano, is one of the most outstanding pieces, which masterfully narrates biblical passages and scenes from the life of Christ.

In addition to its architectural value, the Cathedral of Granada houses a rich artistic heritage, with works of outstanding painters and sculptors from different periods. Among them is the Royal Chapel, final resting place of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, whose tombs sculpted in marble are a true work of art.

Correos celebrates this anniversary with the issue of a block sheet with an image of the imposing main façade. The stamp shows a detail of the same façade that shows in a circular frame the Incarnation, in a deep niche. The sculptures of Mary and Gabriel are the protagonists of this biblical scene where the archangel on clouds and on his knees, with his wings spread out, appears accompanied by the rays coming from the dove of the Holy Spirit.
