Since time immemorial, travellers and navigators have given names to geographical features. As Antarctica was the last of the continents to be discovered, the first seal hunters who travelled along its coasts began to name the islands they discovered and the most notable geographical features. Thus, names appeared that were descriptive of the activity they carried out there, such as “Whaling Bay”, of their physical appearance, such as “Half Moon Island”, or of their rulers, such as “Queen Maud Mountains”. Over time, names of legendary explorers were added to these names, such as “Amundsen Sea”, “Shackleton Glacier” or “Scott Island”, among many others.
