KGH/KNI Celebrates 250 Years

For many years the Greenlandic postal service was part of the Royal Greenland Trading Department KGH, later named KNI, Kalaallit Niuerfiat. However, it is the proud history of the trading company and its profound significance for Greenland that has led us to issue this anniversary stamp created by Maria Panínguak’ Kjærulff from Nuuk.

On 16th May 2024, KNI celebrated its 250th anniversary as a nationwide supplier of energy and consumer goods to Greenland homes. Consequently, there is a direct line from the colonial monopolisation on trade in Greenland and KGH’s establishment of landing sites, which helped create today’s settlement pattern, to the self-governing utility company that strives both to ensure everyday life and a more self-sufficient and sustainable Greenland.
