About Measuring Time

On November 10th, La Poste (the French postal service) is issuing a collector's booklet of 12 postage stamps featuring timekeeping instruments, from sundials to grandfather clocks and wristwatches.

This booklet, produced in collaboration with the Musée du Temps (Time Museum) in Besançon (25), explores various timekeeping instruments, from sundials to wristwatches, including grandfather clocks and the iconic wall clock of the 1960s.

- Planetary Clock: Dating from 1872 and made by Joseph Lanfrey (1843-1898), it is inspired by the astronomical clocks of Antide Janvier. Lanfrey's planetary clock consists of a black marble base surmounted by a planetarium, a mechanism representing the movement of the planets and celestial bodies. In this case, it depicts the Sun, Earth, and Moon. Presented at the Universal Exhibition in Lyon in 1872, it won a gold medal and was subsequently built in several copies.
