About 50 Years of Autonomy of the Autonomous Region of Madeira

The Autonomous Region of Madeira has celebrated 50 years of autonomy since its creation under the Portuguese Constitution of 1976, which granted the region the power to govern many of its own affairs while remaining part of Portugal. Autonomy gave Madeira its own Legislative Assembly and Regional Government, allowing it to make decisions on education, health, transport, economic development, and other local matters. Over the decades, the region strengthened its identity, modernized its infrastructure, and gradually gained more powers from the central government. The anniversary has been marked by cultural events, exhibitions, concerts, and official honors, including the creation of a special insignia recognizing contributions to Madeira’s development. Every 2 April, Madeirans celebrate Autonomy Day, reflecting on their unique history and the progress achieved over the past half-century, highlighting both local pride and the importance of self-governance.
