The issue “Operation Entebbe – 50 Years” commemorates the 50th anniversary of one of Israel’s most famous military rescue operations. On 4 July 1976, Israeli commandos carried out a daring mission at Entebbe Airport in Uganda to rescue more than 100 hostages held by terrorists after the hijacking of an Air France flight. The operation, later known as Operation Jonathan in memory of commander Lt. Col. Jonathan Netanyahu, became a symbol of courage, determination and the commitment to saving human lives. The stamp issue honours the bravery of the soldiers, the rescued hostages and all those involved in this historic event.
