About First Prime Minister of Aruba - Henny Eman

Jan Hendrik Albert “Henny” Eman (20 March 1948 – 6 January 2025), occupies a place of enduring honor in the history of Aruba. As the island’s first Prime Minister, he was entrusted with the solemn responsibility of leading Aruba at the moment of her constitutional awakening. In 1986, under his calm and resolute leadership, Aruba stepped into a new constitutional chapter as a separate country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, guided by courage, wisdom, and enduring faith in what lay ahead.

This new beginning unfolded during a time of profound challenge. The closure of the Lago refinery had shaken the foundations of the Aruban economy, casting uncertainty over livelihoods and prospects. Yet Mr. Henny Eman was a statesman of vision. He saw not decline, but transformation. Through strategic foresight, he repositioned Aruba on the global stage, particularly in the field of tourism. His successful advocacy for a United States pre-clearance facility in 1987 made Aruba the first country in the Caribbean to secure this distinction. This achievement would redefine the island’s accessibility, competitiveness, and international standing.

For Mr. Eman, nation-building was not solely measured in economic terms. He believed that the true strength of Aruba resided in its people. Education, in his view, was both a right and a duty to future generations. Under his leadership, Aruban students were granted expanded opportunities for higher education, on the island itself by the re-opening of the Universiteit van Aruba in 1988, in the Netherlands, and in the United States, planting the first seeds of knowledge, leadership, and self-reliance that continue to flourish today.

Affectionately known as “Min Pres” Eman governed with a profound sense of equality and social justice. He introduced universal health care coverage for all residents of Aruba, affirming that dignity and care should extend to every member of society. His leadership style was defined by trust and respect: he empowered those around him, encouraged ownership and accountability, and inspired excellence through example. In this way, he was not only a Prime Minister, but a mentor and moral compass for public service.

Henny Eman’s legacy is woven into the fabric of modern Aruba, deep into its institutions, its opportunities, and its values. His life’s work reflects a rare harmony of vision and humility, authority and compassion. He helped shape a nation rooted in responsibility, resilience, and hope, leaving behind a legacy worthy of remembrance by generations, and of honor within the Kingdom to which Aruba proudly belongs.

Artwork Description

The commemorative stamp artwork is designed by Mr. Nigel Matthew, a distinguished Aruban painter and visual artist, widely recognized for his contributions to the design of national banknotes and postal stamps. His work reflects a deep understanding of Aruba’s visual identity and historical narrative.

The composition is centered on a prominent, full-color portrait of Mr. Henny Eman, rendered with dignity and presence, capturing the statesman in a manner befitting his historic role as Aruba’s first Prime Minister. This central image is complemented in the lower portion by two smaller black-and-white portraits, portraying Mr. Eman in moments of active public service, thereby emphasizing his daily dedication, leadership, and sense of duty.

The background of the artwork is formed by the national flag of Aruba, symbolizing unity, sovereignty, and the enduring spirit of the nation he helped shape. Encasing the design is a green border, thoughtfully chosen to reflect the color of the political party to which Mr. Eman belonged, and to acknowledge the ideals and values that guided his public life.

Through its layered imagery and deliberate symbolism, the artwork honors both the man and the moment—presenting a visual tribute that reflects leadership in action, service to country, and a legacy deeply woven into the fabric of Aruba’s history.
