One of the most beautiful countries in Europe, Romania offers a wealth of travel experiences just waiting to be both enjoyed and discovered, and the words that best capture the essence of what makes Romania unique are: authentic, natural and cultural.
Romfilatelia and the Romanian Post introduce into circulation on Monday, August 3rd this year, the postage stamp issue entitled VIA TRANSILVANICA, inviting philately enthusiasts to embark on an imaginary journey along Romania’s first national recreational walking route and the first long-distance route to cross the country, from Putna to Drobeta-Turnu Severin, designed to be covered on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.
The philatelic issue, comprising four postage stamps, a perforated souvenir sheet and
two First Day Covers, highlights the project developed by the Tășuleasa Social Association, an organisation that has been running educational, cultural and environmental projects for over 26 years, and which was launched in 2022, following four and a half years of dedicated work.
In 2025, the organisation began extending the trail to Romania’s other historic regions and inaugurated a new section, Terra Borza Teutonica, spanning 170 kilometres and establishing Brașov as the third gateway to the Via Transilvanica. The expansion will continue over the next 20 years, further strengthening the project’s mission to promote slow tourism and support the local communities along the route.
Known as “The path that unites”, Via Transilvanica helps visitors discover Romania’s culture, traditions and natural beauty, passing through eight historic regions, 10 counties and 12 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Via Transilvanica is a long-term social project through which every step taken by hikers contributes to supporting local communities, preserving cultural heritage and promoting a form of tourism that celebrates the relationship between people and the places they pass through. The project is designed to create lasting connections between people, communities and the authentic landscapes of Romania.
Via Transilvanica is a route conceived by people for people, and the motifs featured on this postage stamp issue capture the landmarks that define the project’s identity.
The perforated souvenir sheet, featuring a postage stamp with a face value of Lei 32, depicts a map of the route, providing an overview of the ‘Road that Unites’, which stretches across Romania for more than 1,600 kilometres and connects communities and historic regions.
The four postage stamps depict defining symbols of the Via Transilvanica experience: the andesite milestone (with a face value of Lei 6), the trail’s distinctive landmark and a unique artistic expression marking each kilometre; the volunteers of the Tășuleasa Social Association (with a face value of Lei 27), without whom this project would not have been possible; the hiker’s booklet (with a face value of Lei 3), which preserves the memory of each stage completed and the stamps collected along the route, and the hikers (with a face value of Lei 6,50), who bring the trail to life and transform every step into a meaningful encounter between nature, heritage, local communities and themselves. The two First Day Covers complete the story of this project, which promotes tourism and the authentic discovery of Romania, step by step.
