About Angel 1st Issue

On October 7, 1990 Lithuania released its first new stamps in more than 50 years.

Lithuania previously issued stamps from 1918 until 1940, when it became a Republic in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Lithuania declared itself Independent from the Soviet Union on March 11, 1990.

On June 7, 1990 the design competition of the first standard postage stamps of the Independent Republic of Lithuania was announced. On July 19, 1990 ""Spindulys"" printing enterprise was given an official order to print postage stamps with 5 and 10 value numerals, later – with 20 and 50 value numerals.

The four stamps released October 7, 1990 simply bear numerals indicating the denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50.

The postage stamps were valid for postage within Lithuania only.

The stamps show an Angel of Rebirth bearing light and a pillar cross – the eternal guard of Lithuania’s faith – against a background of map of Lithuania and rays of hope.
