About The Red Book of Lithuania - Mammals

The European mink (Mustela lutreola) is a predatory mammal, member of the mustelid family. It is similar in size and appearance to the ferret or the otter. Fur of the European mink is dense, glossy, colour varies from brown to blackish-brown, and the lips and chin are pure white. The mink inhabits areas close to water bodiesand can swim and dive well. It feeds on fish, frogs, crayfish, and birds. The otter (Lutra lutra) is a predatory mammal, member of the mustelid family. It likes torrential forest streams or lakes with nonfreezing breaks and overgrown grass. In the area where the otter inhabits, permanent burrows are found. The otter dives and swims well. It can swim underwater 400 metres without coming up for air; sometimes it can reach speed of 11–14 km/h.
