2024 12-Sided Coronation Chair £1 Coin
The new 12-sided pound coin was introduced to replace the traditional rounded £1 coin. The new design for the £1 coins is made of two metals, with a outer gold-coloured nickel-brass ring surrounding an inner silver-coloured nickel-plated alloy piece.
The Obverse
The obverse of the new 12-sided pound coin features a left-facing portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. The portrait sits atop a security feature within the outer nickel-brass ring, a hologram-like image changing from a '£' symbol to the number '1' , depending on the angle from which it is viewed. The outer ring also features two inscriptions: the outer edge features the release year, in this case 2024, on each of the 12 sides, with the larger inscription, 'CHARLES III - KING OF GIBRALTAR - £1 - 2024.
The Reverse
The reverse of the new 12-sided pound coin features the Coronation Chair, also known as St Edward's Chair or King Edward's Chair, used at every coronation of English and British Monarchs at Westminster Abbey since 1308. The design of the chair features King Charles III's royal cypher and sits upon a background of the circular stained-glass window on the northern façade of Westminster Abbey. The outer edge of the outer nickel-brass ring features the inscription 'ONE POUND' twice per size, totalling 24 times, with the larger inscription, 'LONG TO REIGN OVER US - GOD SAVE THE KING'.
