About 2026 - 100th Anniversary of the Discovery of Gibraltar 2 50p Coin

This commemorative coin celebrates the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Gibraltar 2, the fossilised skull of a Neanderthal child that became central to understanding the prehistoric communities that once inhabited the Rock. Discovered in 1926 at Devil’s Tower Cave by pioneering British archaeologist Dorothy Garrod, this landmark find was her first internationally recognised excavation and established Gibraltar as one of the most important locations for Neanderthal research in Europe. Offering rare evidence of juvenile development, the specimen has provided vital insights into Neanderthal growth, behaviour, and family life for a century.

The reverse of the coin features the fossilised skull alongside a facial reconstruction of the Neanderthal child, with a primitive stone tool set in the centre. It bears the year of discovery, '1926', and the inscriptions 'Discovery of Gibraltar 2' and '100th Anniversary Neanderthal Child'.

The obverse of this coin features the Coat of Arms of the Government of Gibraltar with the inscription 'Charles III - King of Gibraltar - 2026'.

Note: Each commemorative coin is in uncirculated condition and has been minted and packed in sealed bags of 50.
