Alberts Rumba (1892-1962) is one of the most outstanding Latvian speed skaters and notable sports figures of the 1920s–1940s. His first major achievement was winning 7th place in the all-around speed skating event at the First Winter Olympics (1924, Chamonix, France), and he was the only Latvian representative to also participate in the Winter Olympics in 1928 in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
A. Rumba was an eight-time Latvian champion in speed skating all-around (1924, 1926-1932) and also the holder of many Latvian records in various distances – 500, 1500, 5000 and 10,000 meters.
In both 1928 and 1931, A. Rumba won the title of winner at the Latvian General Sports Festival and was the first to receive the President of Latvia Gustavs Zemgals' traveling award in 1928.
During his 69-year life, A. Rumba has not only built a brilliant career as an athlete, but has also been active in various sports organizations, especially in the work of the Latvian Winter Sports Union.
