Founded 100 years ago in 1926, the National Daffodil Society (NDS) has members across Aotearoa New Zealand and from around the world who all share a passion for growing daffodils.
Some breed and exhibit new varieties, while others grow thousands each year to sell as flowers and bulbs. Daffodil breeders have created thousands of varieties in New Zealand alone.
Each spring, enthusiasts gather for daffodil shows, including the National Daffodil Society’s North Island and South Island events, where they can see the latest varieties and the competition for Champion Bloom. If you are curious about this horticultural hobby, daffodil shows are a great way to get to know other daffodil growers and learn about growing them yourself.
To celebrate the centenary of the NDS, this special stamp sheetlet features seven varieties of daffodils bred here in Aotearoa New Zealand.
This sheetlet will be issued with the support of the Cancer Society, whose daffodil emblem is a symbol of hope for people affected by cancer. This year their annual appeal, Daffodil Day, takes place on Friday 28 August. Donations help cancer patients and their families (whānau) to get the care and practical support they need, and to help fund world-leading cancer research and vital prevention programmes. Over 50 daffodil farms are involved in Daffodil Day.
