Commemorating Aruba Status Aparte
This commemorative stamp artwork is designed by Mr. Armando Goedgedrag, a visual artist, professional photographer, painter, and multimedia specialist based in Aruba. Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Multimedia Design and a Master’s degree in Animation, he is widely recognized for his realistic and vibrant portrayals of the island’s natural environment, its landscapes, wildlife, and flora expressed through painting, photography, murals, and multimedia works. His deep personal connection to Aruba’s natural heritage makes him a fitting and inspired choice for this commemorative issue.
The design is presented as a souvenir sheet containing four stamps denominated 100c, 130c, 220c, and 320c framed within a single bordered sheet and unified by one seamless, panoramic composition. This format invites the viewer to experience the artwork both as individual stamps and as one cohesive visual celebration of Aruba’s forty years of Status Aparte.
The title "Commemorating 40 Years of Status Aparte" is inscribed at the top of the sheet, immediately orienting the viewer to the historic significance of the issue. Yet the celebration does not end there because, 2026 also marks the 50th anniversary of Aruba's national flag and anthem, two enduring symbols of identity and pride that have remained at the heart of what it means to be Aruban. Together, these milestones make 2026 a year of extraordinary meaning for the island and its people.
The composition is thoughtfully designed to guide the viewer on a visual journey across the island. The colors of Aruba’s national flag harmonizes with the island’s most beautiful landscapes, billowing proudly against a clear blue sky, a powerful symbol of sovereignty and the constitutional milestone achieved on January 1, 1986. The Coat of Arms is placed near the heart of the wise Shoco, Aruba’s national bird and cherished national symbol, depicted with quiet authority and watchful dignity, its gaze steady and composed, embodying the resilience and grounded spirit of the Aruban people.
Nearby, the vivid Prikichi, the island’s beloved Aruban Parakeet soars freely through the wild terrain, evoking the freedom and vitality that Status Aparte represents. From rugged rocky hills to lush green patches where the Wanglo, Aruba’s national flower, can be found in full bloom, the design celebrates the island’s rich biodiversity. If fortunate, one might even glimpse the vibrant blue-tailed emerald hummingbird fluttering through the scene.
The coastline, renowned for its brilliant turquoise horizon, is accentuated by a striking blue line tracing the lower portion of the sheet and a pelican in graceful flight. Beneath the waves, a sea turtle glides serenely an emblem of longevity and endurance powerfully symbolizing the commemoration of forty years of Status Aparte in Aruba.
Through its vibrant palette, layered symbolism, and rich natural imagery, the souvenir sheet presents a joyful and dignified tribute to forty years of Aruban self-determination honoring the land, its creatures, its institutions, and the constitutional achievement that continues to define and inspire this island nation.
First Day Cover Design
The First Day Cover envelope is designed to complement the souvenir sheet with simplicity and elegance. Against a clean white background, the left side of the envelope features an illustration of a hand proudly holding the Aruban flag on a wooden stick, its blue field, yellow stripes, and red star rendered in vivid color a gesture that is both intimate and celebratory, as if held by a citizen of Aruba herself.
Behind the flag, in large, sweeping light-blue typography, the number 40 is displayed with quiet grandeur, serving as an immediate and unmistakable reference to the forty years of Status Aparte being commemorated. The numeral’s soft color and flowing script style give it a sense of both festivity and reverence.
At the bottom of the envelope, the bilingual inscription “First Day of Issue / Eerste Dag van Uitgifte” is printed in italics, honoring both the English and Dutch languages that reflect Aruba’s identity as an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The souvenir sheet is affixed to the right side of the envelope, allowing the full stamp artwork to be displayed alongside the cover design, together forming a complete and cohesive collector’s item worthy of this historic milestone.
