On 17 September 2015 a global outreach campaign was launched to showcase United Nations field careers and celebrate the United Nations’s workforce as the Organization’s greatest asset. The aerial photograph event took place during a gloriously sunny day and involved over 1,000 staff from multiple departments and offices at Headquarters, who joined together dressed in white form each letter of the “What R U doing 4 peace? / Que faites-vous pour la paix?” campaign slogan in English and French, around the
Secretariat Circle in New York.
Event participants stood united in the symbolic colour of peace, while two iconic pictures were created. The images were intended to evoke the raison d’être of the UN, as work towards the cause of peace is at the heart of what the Organization does every day. These extraordinary photographs, in both working languages of the United Nations, were made possible by a major coordination effort, which also marked the seventieth anniversary of the United Nations.
This launch event was organized by the Department of Field Support’s Field Personnel Division. The concept for the images emerged thanks to a “sky’s the limit” brief and endorsed by the then- Chef de Cabinet, Susana Malcorra. It was designed to focus interest on diverse United Nations career options across multiple disciplines in locations around the world.
On 29 May 2018, UNPA will issue a 65¢ definitive stamp in tribute to all those who work tirelessly in the cause of peace, in commemoration of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
