About The Delicate Naiad Dating from the Ice Age

Latvijas Pasts, in cooperation with the Latvian Fund for Nature, has issued a new stamp featuring the delicate naiad, a unique aquatic plant discovered in Latvia just a few years ago. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place at Krāslava History and Art Museum, 8 Pils Street, Krāslava, on Friday, the 10th of August 2018, from 10 AM to 4 PM.

The presentation of the stamp with the participation of the representatives of Latvijas Pasts and the Latvian Fund for Nature is going to be held at the same place at 2 PM. The print run of the stamp Delicate Naiad is 30,000 copies and its face value is €0.85, which corresponds to the cost of sending a regular Class A letter to any country of the world outside the European Union. The release of the stamp is accompanied by a special postmark and a cover with a print run of 1,000 copies. The stamp, the cover and the postmark have been designed by the artist Edgars Folks.

The delicate naiad (Najas tenuissima) is a unique aquatic plant discovered in Latvia just a few years ago. Only a little more than 50 habitats of this plant are known around the world, and several of them are located in the lakes of Sauleskalns (Sun Hill) lake land near Krāslava. The habitat of the delicate naiad in Lake Sivers is to be considered the richest habitat of this species in the world. The delicate naiad is a species that has survived since the end of the ice age and can be found only in exceptionally clear and clean waters such as the lakes of Sauleskalns district in Latgale. As a very rare and endangered plant, the delicate naiad is included in the European Council’s Species and Habitats Conservation Directive and is protected throughout the European Union.
