About Sepac - Spectacular View

The common theme of the 13 countries issuing Sepac stamps is “Spectacular View“. The motif on the Icelandic stamp is Vestrahorn, a strikingly beautiful mountain in southeastern Iceland. Vestrahorn’s very impressive peaks reach up to around 454 m and are girded by steep, imposing cliffs. Vestrahorn is one of the few mountains in Iceland made almost exclusively of gabbro with occurrences of granophyre. It is located by the open ocean, about 10 km east of Höfn in Hornafjörður. A difficult and rugged pathway lies between the mountain and the shoreline at Vestrahorn.

Further west, seals abound on the reefs around Stokksnes Peninsula. Vestrahorn belongs to the mountain range outside of Skarðsdalur. This beautiful mountain range is listed on the Natural Conservation Register. There, various minerals can be found. The gabbró-granophyre is about 6,6 million years old. Vestrahorn is located at the border of the settlements of Þorsteinn leggur and Hrollaugur Rögnvaldsson. Hrollaugur was the son of the Earl of Møre in Norway and the brother of Ganger-Hrolf. He first landed his ship at Reykjavík but found that his high-seat pillars had driven ashore at Vestrahorn where he consequently settled.
