About Flora and Fauna - Herzegovina Bellflower and Tornjak Dog

Herzegovina bellflower (Campanula hercegovina) is an endemic plant that grows mainly on the three Herzegovina mountains: Čvrsnica, Čabulja and Prenj, as well as in the river canyons of Neretva, Rakitnica and Diva Grabovceva. It grows at altitudes of 1150 to 1500m, but in the canyon of the River Neretva it can be found at lower altitude. It blooms in July and August in bunches with bright-blue flowers in the shape of bells, which crowns from the third splits into five triangular lobes. The bell flower’s fruit is screwed shell with many tiny seeds.

Tornjak is the dog with very nice exterior height of 60 to 70 cm, various hair colors (black, white, gray, yellow, brown and red). Its body is strong and harmonious; face is always brighter than the dark body marks. Long hair with the one underneath is rich and complex as to protect from all adverse weather conditions, tail is covered plentifully by long hair. Tornjak is extremely resistant to diseases, undemanding for food and accommodation and during snowy nights it keeps on lying on snow. It is steady and good-natured towards people, aggressive with caution towards wild animals and home attackers, sheepfold, herd and owner. It is persistent in completing tasks entrusted with, understands easily and agrees to the owner’s will as well as training; incorruptible and distrustful towards strangers.
