The Treaty of Péronne, signed on 14 September 1641 between the King of France Louis XIII and Honoré II Grimaldi, Prince of Monaco, removed Monaco from Spanish protection and made it a French protectorate. Spain responded by seizing Monaco’s possessions in Italy. To compensate for this, Louis XIII gave Honoré II several territories including the Vicomté de Carlat, which later became a comté in 1643. Under the governance of the Princes of Monaco, the previously war-torn Carladès region experienced one hundred and forty-eight years of political and social peace. The tower of Mur-de Barrez, the most significant remaining vestige of the town’s 15th century fortifications, was given historical monument status in 1913, and was renamed the “Tower of Monaco” in 1925. In 1954, the townspeople incorporated the Grimaldi fusily argent and gules shield into their coat of arms, at the centre of Mur-de-Barrez’ three towers. Today, the mutual friendship is symbolised by the fact that Princess Gabriella holds the title Countess of Carladès.
