Wombling Free on Alderney. Visitors to Alderney can explore the delightful Womble Trail, where statues of much loved Womble characters bring nostalgia to life. These charming figures are scattered across the island, each with their own personality and story to tell.
Madame Cholet can be found at Alderney Harbour. As the burrow’s lively cook, she is a bundle of energy, with a love for French phrases and a quick temper (though she forgives just as quickly). The Wombles are wise to stay on her good side, as her culinary skills are second to none!
At Alderney Airport, you’ll find Great Uncle Bulgaria, the wise and wonderful leader of the Wimbledon burrow. With a love for The Times newspaper – especially its crossword – he keeps the burrow connected to the human world. No one knows exactly how old he is, but he is very old, and is head of the Wimbledon burrow.
Mannez Train Station is home to Tobermory, the burrow’s inventor. He has a talent for turning rubbish into ingenious gadgets and keeps the burrow running smoothly. Tobermory values his friendship with Great Uncle Bulgaria and although he has embraced the 21st century, he respects Great Uncle Bulgaria’s views on the origin of things and has great respect for the old Womble’s position.
At the Butes Playground, Orinoco can be found on a children’s ‘whisper seat’. Orinoco’s carefree nature and loveable charm make him a favorite among young Wombles – though his knack for avoiding work might be his cleverest trait. Always calm and collected, Orinoco takes life at his own leisurely pace.
Wellington, a new addition to the trail found at Hospital roundabout, is the brightest of all the Wombles. A keen inventor and bookworm, Tobermory has taken Wellington under his wing to share his inventor’s knowledge, although he tries to encourage him to have fun too!
And finally, meet the adventurous Alderney, another new addition to the trail. A distant relative of Great Uncle Bulgaria, her statue can be found at Le Clonque Car Park on the West of the Island. Strong-willed and full of ideas, Alderney isn’t afraid to break from tradition and the Womble way of doing things, even if her enthusiasm sometimes leads her off-track.
