About ATM - Tanks in the IDF, AMX-13
The AMX-13 was a small, fast French-made tank used by the Israel Defense Forces in the 1950s and 1960s. It was designed as a light, mobile tank—more like a fast scout than a heavy battlefield brawler. One of its most unique features was its oscillating turret and automatic loader, which allowed it to fire several rounds quickly without manual reloading. Armed with a 75mm gun (later upgraded), it was effective for ambushes and rapid movement but had relatively thin armor, making it vulnerable against heavier tanks. The AMX-13 saw action with Israel during conflicts such as the Suez Crisis, but over time it was replaced by stronger tanks like the Centurion tank as battlefield needs evolved.
