About 50th Anniversary of the Death of Aldo Volpini

Aldo Volpini was born in 1920 in San Marino and was undoubtedly the last great stonemason-artist of the San Marino tradition, one of the Master Craftsmen of the small Republic and one of the most accomplished figures in its artistic world. His sculptures and bas-reliefs are preserved in various parts of the world, and the streets of San Marino proudly display his finest works. Artist, sculptor, set designer, portraitist, restorer, but essentially a ‘stonemason’: the simplicity of his manner and the pride of his character clearly reveal his pride in the legacy of a centuries-old tradition, elevated to the level of art by his expressive and interpretative skills with stone, his favourite medium. To enhance the issue by evoking the three-dimensionality of the artist’s sculptural works, a special ‘embossing’ technique has been used, which allows certain parts of the stamp specifically the figure of the saint and the bear to be rendered in relief against the background surface.
