About Ethnological Treasure, Wooden Plow

First, more complex tools for soil tillage was manually plow that was replaced by a wooden plow in the early 18th century (without plow cart and any iron parts) that is directly related to the bullock and horse cart. First wooden plows which consisted of a ploughshare that was used for horizontal furrows cutting, lines for vertical furrows cutting and boards for tumbling furrows, were developed from manual plows. Soil tillage by wooden plow was a difficult and exhausting job for which it was necessary to use a large number of oxen and horses to tow. Wooden plowing devices start to disappear in the early 20th century and in the mid-century they were rare and were used only for smaller jobs.
During the transition from ploughshare to wooden and semi-wooden (semi-iron) plow, several types of devices for plowing appears which are also first perfected plows. At the same time the wooden plow had more iron parts. The complexity of construction of the wooden plow shows expediency of each of its part. Although primitive, at that time it was perfect tool for soil tillage. The real value of its construction lay in the fact that the wooden plow is basis of all newer plows. Moldboard, ridge and chisel plows, which are made today, are used mainly for tractor towing.
