About The Archaeological Site Osanici Near Stolac

The remains of the prehistoric fortified settlement lie on a steep crest 220 meters above Vidovo Plan in the village Ošanići, three km northwest of Stolac. It is presumed to have belonged to the Illyrian tribe of Ošanići, three km northwest of Stolac. It is presumed to have belonged to the Illyrian tribe to the Daorsi, whose territory extended throughout the Neretva River valley, including a narrow coastal belt. According to the most recent archeological investigations of Ž. Marić, B. Marijan and N.Cambi, the settlement complex with a surface of circa 15 hectares, called “Ošanići Hillfort” by some, and “the city of Daorson” by others, existed from the 5th century BC to the mid 1st century BC, when it was probably destroyed by the aggressive Delmatae tribe.
