If there is a story that identifies Teruel in the world, it is that of the Lovers of Teruel. The story takes place in Teruel in the 13th century, when the city was a frontier land; Two young people, Juan Diego Martínez de Marcilla and Isabel de Segura, in love since they were young, lived a beautiful and at the same time tragic love story. Their remains were found for the first time between 1553 and 1555 in the church of San Pedro, where they were buried. At present both rest in the Mausoleum of the Lovers, under some fantastic sculptures carved in alabaster.
