About Painting, Mural New love - Jorge Gay (2005)

If there is a story that identifies Teruel in the world, it is that of the Lovers of Teruel. The story takes place in Teruel in the 13th century, when the city was a frontier land; Two young people, Juan Diego Martínez de Marcilla and Isabel de Segura, in love since they were young, lived a beautiful and at the same time tragic love story. Their remains were found for the first time between 1553 and 1555 in the church of San Pedro, where they were buried. At present both rest in the Mausoleum of the Lovers, under some fantastic sculptures carved in alabaster.

In this space, two essential components that articulate the chronicle of the city come together: love and art, the Lovers and the Mudéjar.

The church of San Pedro, together with this mausoleum, forms one of the most emblematic artistic ensembles in the city. Added to this set are the Mudejar tower of San Pedro, its exceptional apse and cloister, making up one of the most significant Mudejar centers and which was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1986.

The love story of the Amantes de Teruel has been a source of inspiration in all fields of the arts throughout history and continues to be a reference work for contemporary artists.

An activity that projects and amplifies history for 27 years now, is the medieval recreation around this legendary story that has made the Lovers of Teruel known in a lively and close way: "the Wedding of Isabel de Segura" party that revolves around the story of Isabel and Diego, in which the passion and affection that the people of Teruel feel around these young people is revived every year in February.

For this reason, the Post Office issues a stamp dedicated to the mural entitled "El amor nuevo" by contemporary artist Jorge Gay, a work conceived with his particular style straddling figurative forms and cubist-inspired decompositions.

It is a work that talks about the legend, the city and the feelings that process the author. Both Teruel monuments and the landscape that surrounds the city are recognized in these different plans. Of course there are also the two legendary lovers.
