In 1773 the Education Commission established in Poland and Lithuania was the first secular ministry of education in Europe.

This commission introduced the teaching of natural and exact sciences, and combined elements of general education with practical training in agricultural and craft skills. Also, the commission was one of the first institutions of its kind in Europe that began to systematically take care of the physical education of students.

Thanks to the educational commission, corporal punishment and teacher authoritarianism were also abandoned in educational institutions, and equality of all castes was proclaimed. In addition, Latin was replaced by Polish in middle and high schools.
