The Stained Glass Windows of the Grand Ducal Palace
The Grand Ducal Palace is located in the middle of the old town in the heart of Luxembourg City. It has been the official residence of the Grand Duke for over a century. During the summer months, the building is open to the public and visitors can take a peek behind the scenes during a guided tour.
In the middle of the 18th century, when the building still served as the city hall, the original building was extended by an addition. Here the current Salle de Balance, where farmers previously had their goods publicly inspected and weighed, can be found. The highlight of this room is the elaborate glass windows created in the 20th century. Each window is dedicated to the coats of arms of successive sovereigns, symbolising the continuity of the Luxembourg monarchy. The windows were created by Luxembourg artist Ad Deville (1935 - 2022) and impress with their colourful execution, highly detailed glass artistry and symbolic representation of the history of the dynasty of the Grand Duchy.
