The Llimoi Carnús is a small, rebellious, mischievous, and roguish demon who lives in the forests of Sant Julià de Lòria and whose sole intention is to play pranks and entertain everyone. It is also one of the most genuine expressions of Andorran popular culture.
It originated as a fantastical creature created by the artist Sergi Mas in the 1970s, who starred in a series of comic strips published in Andorra Magazine. He later appeared in various popular events in the parish, such as els pastorets (the shepherds); in the form of capgros or cabezudo (big heads) from the Sant Julià de Lòria giants' group; in place names such as Barranc dels Llimois; and even on a family hiking trail.
The Llimoi is an example of living intangible heritage, passed down from generation to generation, accompanying celebrations, gatherings, and shared moments.
Its creator, Sergi Mas Balaguer, is a multifaceted author based in Andorra, whose artistic career has spanned various disciplines such as painting, drawing, engraving, and ceramics, as well as other more experimental disciplines and techniques.
Alongside the character of Llimoi, Cardús also created the cow Bernarda, both protagonists of different comic strips that shared the author's sarcastic, yet somewhat naive, approach to current affairs in Andorra, using elements typical of the country's culture and society.
His contribution to various designs and philatelic motifs for both the French postal service and Correos de España is also noteworthy. For La Poste, he illustrated a series of stamps on Andorran legends, which was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres medal by the French Ministry of Culture. For the Andorran stamps issued by Correos, he has illustrated several designs in the Christmas series.
The stamp is a tribute to oral memory, popular creativity, and the community's ability to keep its traditions alive.
