Sports - Mariano Haro Cisneros

Mariano Haro Cisneros (born 1940) is one of Spain's greatest long-distance runners and a legendary figure in Spanish athletics. Nicknamed the "Lion of Becerril", he dominated Spanish cross-country and distance running during the 1960s and 1970s. Haro won numerous national titles, represented Spain at four Olympic Games (1968, 1972, 1976 and 1980), and achieved international success with several medals at the World Cross Country Championships. He is widely regarded as a pioneer who inspired future generations of Spanish distance runners.

To honour his remarkable sporting career, Spain issued a Sports (Deporte) commemorative stamp dedicated to Mariano Haro Cisneros on 27 July 2026. The stamp features a portrait of Haro alongside a large attached vignette depicting him in action, celebrating his achievements and enduring contribution to Spanish athletics. Printed by offset, the issue has a face value of €3, measures 28.8 × 40.9 mm with an attached 57.6 × 40.9 mm vignette, was produced in sheets of 10 stamps with 10 vignettes, and had a print run of 65,000.
