35th Anniversary of the Restoration of Estonia’s Independence. The restoration of Estonia’s independence was made possible by the determined efforts of the political leaders of the time and the united will of the Estonian people to live once again in a free country. It was preceded by the events of the Singing Revolution, which brought people together and gave increasing momentum to the pursuit of freedom. The Night Song Festivals of 1988 and the Eestimaa Laul gathering at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds drew tens of thousands of people and openly expressed the desire to restore Estonia’s independence.

At 11.03 p.m. on 20 August 1991, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia adopted the Resolution on the National Independence of Estonia. The historic moment was marked by Ülo Nugis’s strike of the gavel, which has become one of the best-known symbols of the restoration of independence.

The gavel strike, the colours of the Estonian flag and the jubilant crowd depicted on the stamp bring together the formal decision and the will of the people that gave it strength.
