This commemorative stamp is issued to commemorate Mongolia’s hosting of the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
The stamp features the extremely rare Mazaalai, or Gobi bear (Ursus arctos gobiensis), which is found exclusively in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, together with its cub. The depiction highlights the importance of protecting biodiversity and the fragile ecosystems of the Gobi Desert.
The official COP17 logo and imagery of regenerating vegetation symbolize efforts to reduce land degradation, combat desertification, and restore degraded land.
The stamp is distinctive in that it was printed using four-color offset lithography on recycled paper certified under the FSC Recycled Credit system, reflecting the spirit of COP17 by promoting the responsible use of natural resources and environmentally friendly consumption.
This stamp calls for greater efforts to protect the environment and biodiversity, promote sustainable land use and restoration, and join the global fight against desertification and land degradation.
