Earth Day
“As we were moving as far away as possible it was becoming increasingly smaller. Finally it reached a size of guinea-pig – the most beautiful guinea-pig you could imagine”, James Irwin, astronaut of the Apollo mission described in that way the view of the Earth in 1971.
Earth Day is celebrated all over the world as of 22 April 1970 when, incited by Senator Gaylord Nelson, mass demonstrations were held for the environmental protection on universities and student hostels all over the USA. This first mass demonstration for environmental protection, participated by more than 20 million of people, was called the” national gathering on environment”.
The term Earth Day was used for the first time a year ago in a proclamation of Mayor of San Francisco in which is decided to celebrate the Earth Day in the city and area of San Francisco.
A high interest of the public for that issue brought the issue of environmental protection to the political scene. Celebration of the Earth day became again current twenty years later – in 1990 when more than 200 million of people participated in manifestations of the Earth Day throughout the world. This world appearance got the official form at the UN conference on environment and development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 that was attended by a large number of representatives of governments and non governmental associations, which agreed upon a long-term program for promotion of sustainable development.
