About 150 Years of the Parish of Uzdol

The parish of Uzdol is situated in the south-west of Bosnia and Herzegovina, belongs to the municipality of Rama-Prozor and is to the east of the city of Prozor. It belongs to the archbishop’s district of Vrhbosna and is a part of the Rama deanery. The parish is founded in 1856 and is under the protection of St. John the Baptist.

Throughout its history the parish of Uzdol was exposed to great misfortunes. It suffered severe damage in the last war when on 14th September 1993 the soldiers of the Bosnia and Herzegovina army committed a dreadful crime by killing 29 Uzdol parishioners of Croatian nationality and 12 Croatian army soldiers. Other believers were exiled and forced to settle all over the world.

After the war people started to come back and this process of restoration is still going on. Out of 280 families living in the parish region in pre-war times only 137 of them came back. Even today, 11 years since the war ended, there are villages on the territory of the parish that still haven’t welcomed a single returning believer.
