100 years ago, Eisenstadt became the capital of Burgenland, making it the smallest provincial capital in Austria.
Burgenland only became an Austrian federal state in 1921. Originally, the city of Ödenburg (Sopron) was intended to be the state capital, but following a referendum, the city remained part of Hungary. From 1921 to 1925, the municipality of Bad Sauerbrunn served as the provisional seat of the state administration. On April 30, 1925, it was officially decided that Eisenstadt would become the seat of the state government. However, Eisenstadt was only formally established as the state capital in the state constitution in 1981. The city is best known for the historic Esterházy Palace and the Bergkirche—also known as the Haydn Church—where composer Joseph Haydn spent a large part of his life as the court conductor for the Esterházy family. The stamp motif features Eisenstadt’s historic town hall, which dates back to the 17th century.
