About St Athanasius Church, Berg im Drautal

The former pilgrimage church of St Athanasius stands in the middle of a field near the Drautal federal road in the Carinthian municipality of Berg im Drautal.

It was first mentioned in historical records in 1443 and consecrated in 1485. The tall late Gothic chancel dating from 1481, topped by a slender wooden tower, lends the building its distinctive appearance. A low nave is adjoined by an open porch. The altar area is characterised by a Gothic net-ribbed vault, and the high altar dates back to 1666. The church’s dedication to Saint Athanasius, Patriarch of Alexandria, has been recorded since 1782. A Baroque altar of St Athanasius houses his statue, and pilgrims once drew water from the Athanasius spring beside the church. Notable interior features include medieval frescoes, a 17th-century Madonna on a crescent moon, and a pulpit adorned with painted medallions.
