The Games are intended to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind while fostering mutual understanding within a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play. The Olympics date to more than 2,000 years ago, with the earliest records from the 8th century B.C. to the 4th century A.D. The Games were resumed in the late 19th century by a young Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin. The first event of the modern Olympics took place in 1896 in Athens.
