About Latvia

The Republic of Latvia is a European state which is situated on the coast of Baltic Sea. One of the three Baltic States, Latvia is bordered by Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, Russia to the east, Belarus on the south east, and the Baltic Sea on the west. The most famous city is the capital Riga, a World Heritage Site

Latvia’s controversial history is very well documented during the 150 years since its first stamp was issued. There is so much to learn from collecting Latvian stamps that it is a firm favourite collecting country in Europe together with the other two Baltic States members (Estonia and Lithuania).

In 2014 for the first time in its history, all Latvian stamps were issued in EURO denomination only as the country left the LATS to join the EURO currency. During 2013, all stamps issued by Latvia were printed with both currencies.

There are many interesting places to visit, both urban and rural, and a lot of history in Latvia. The wild beauty of Latvia's unspoilt sea coast and its forests which cover approximately a half of Latvia's territory makes Latvia a unique destination.

Latvia prides itself in its commemorative issues and its subjects are predominantly related to national topics of interest although international events are also featured.
