About Art in Montenegro through the Centuries 2026 Mihailo Vukotic

Mihailo Vukotić (b. Čevo, Cetinje, 1904; d. Cetinje, 1944) was a Montenegrin painter from a prominent family, related to the Petrović Njegoš dynasty. He received his artistic training in Belgrade and Paris.

His work belongs to the modern realist movement, distinguished by a melancholic and poetic expression, yet without overt drama. He most often painted portraits, nudes, landscapes and still lifes, characterised by a dark colour palette with pronounced contrasts of light and dark.

Light in his paintings assumes an almost metaphysical role, opening up space for spiritual and emotional meanings. Mihailo Vukotić's oeuvre left a profound and enduring mark on Montenegrin art of the twentieth-century.

Montenegro Post is issuing a commemorative stamp and first day cover as part of the Art in Montenegro through the Centuries 2026 Mihailo Vukotić edition.
