Postmarks were first used in Montenegro on 1 May 1874 at the post office in Cetinje. For cancelling stamps, two single-circle postmarks were used, bearing the Cyrillic inscription “Цетиње” (Cetinje) and a date mark (day, month, year). Due to technical limitations, these postmarks could be used only until 1876, which is why stamps canceled with them are extremely rare today. From 1876 onward, the aforementioned postmarks contained only the day and month markings. At the beginning of 1891, Montenegrin postal stations were supplied with double-circle postmarks featuring a bridge in the centre and an inscription of the place in both Cyrillic and French. Over the following years, postmarks were modified several times, and in 1911, new ones were introduced with time markings and the letters “J” (morning) and “B” (noon). Most postmarks were black, while purple and blue postmarks were less common.
