The Ulcinj Salina, a site that is synonymous with the abundance of flora and fauna, stands as one of the first and, at the same time, the largest Mediterranean salt works. This ecosystem features a variety of saline habitats and brackish pools, resulting in a remarkably rich biodiversity, with several biological components that make it unique on both a national and an international level.Due to its characteristics, the Ulcinj Salina serves as the most important wintering, nesting and feeding ground for birds on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, as well as a crucial stopover for millions of birds on the Adriatic migratory route, to and from Africa.Approximately 250 bird species have been documented in the Ulcinj Salina area, which accounts for more than half of the species that are commonly found within the European Union. The Ulcinj Salina has been included on the list of Montenegro’s proposed Emerald Areas of Special Conservation since 2006, while since 2008 it has been nominated for the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve known as “Lake Skadar and the River Bojana Delta”.
