About 100th Anniversary of the Resumption of the National Museum’s Activity

The National Museum of Montenegro is marking an important anniversary – 100 years since the resumption of its work, dating back to 1926, when the State Museum was re-established in Cetinje. The renewed museum is housed in the former palace of King Nikola.

The establishment of the museum arose from the need to process and preserve the archival material of the Montenegrin state, which had been buried in the courtyard of King Nikola’s palace and was excavated in 1923. Due to the dedicated work of director Dušan Vuksan, and later Mirko Medenica, a large number of objects belonging to the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty were preserved. These valuable artefacts today form an important part of the National Museum’s permanent collection.

The resumption of the museum’s activities was of exceptional importance for the preservation and study of Montenegrin history, as it was the first institution of its kind after 1918. It was from the State Museum that the present-day National Museum of Montenegro later developed.

Montenegro Post is issuing a commemorative postage stamp and a first day cover as part of the 100th Anniversary of the Resumption of the National Museum’s Activity edition.
