20 Years Since the Restoration of Montenegro’s Independence

Throughout the long history of its statehood, small but defiant Montenegro, shaped by uprisings, resistance and glorious battles, has repeatedly reaffirmed the continuity of its statehood.

The referendum held on 21 May 2006 marked a turning point in the country’s modern history, whereby the citizens of Montenegro decided to restore national independence.

These 20 years of independence also represent a period of intensive political, economic and social development, during which Montenegro has strengthened its international position, become a member of NATO and continued its path towards European integration.

This anniversary recalls the values that formed the foundation of that historic process: freedom, the democratic expression of the citizens’ will, respect for diversity and a commitment to building a modern, civic and European society.
