About Nature Protection White Stork - Ciconia Ciconia

The white stork is one of the most recognisable migratory birds and a symbol of good fortune, new life and good news. It is distinguished by its black-and-white plumage, long neck, red beak and long red legs. The species reaches a body length of 95 to 110 cm, while its wingspan can range from 180 to 220 cm.

White storks nest in open areas near marshes, rivers and wet meadows, often building their nests on the roofs of houses, on chimneys and on utility poles, which is why they are known as birds well adapted to living in close proximity to humans. Their diet consists of frogs, insects, snakes, rodents and other small animals.

According to the latest data, there are only two pairs of white stork nesting in Montenegro – in Berane and Bijelo Polje. In Montenegro, this species is protected by law and is considered highly endangered due to the small number of nesting pairs and threats from habitat loss and illegal hunting.

Montenegro Post is issuing a commemorative postage stamp and a first day cover as part of the Nature Protection White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) edition.
