About 80th Anniv. of the Museum of Repulic of Srpska

The Museum was founded on 26th September 1930 under the name of the Museum of Vrbaska Banovina. The founder of the Museum was the first Ban of Vrbaske Banovine Svetislav Tisa Milosavljevic by order of King Aleksandar Karadordevic. The first director of the Museum Vrbaska Banovina was Spiridon Spiro Bocaric, the academy – trained painter from Budva. For the first ten years of his work, (until 1941) in the region of Banja Luka he collected a large number of ethnographic objects of priceless historical, national and cultural value.

Until 1982, the Museum of the RS changed its name and location for several times and afterwords has been located at the House of Worker' s Solidarity where National and University Library and Children's Theatre are located. By the decision of the Government of the RS on 14th November 1992, up-to-then Museum of Bosanska Krajina was renamed into the Museum of RS and declared as the central institution for movable cultural property.

The museum has its own 3.700 m2 of space out of which 1500 m2 is used for permanent exhibition and other parts are premises and depot. The Museum of the RS is engaged in: research, collection, preservation, specialized processing, study, protection, exposition and publication of museum's collection as a common national heritage.

In his collections, the Museum of the RS keeps more than 30.000 displays. The museum has a specialized library with more than 14.000 books. By the adaption of its premises, the Museum of the RS has gained the space for authors, thematic and visiting exhibitions. On 26th September 2010, the Museum of the RS celebrates 80 years of its existence.
